Parental Controls

There are several ways to approach parental controls.  Many on the security suites, including Zone Alarm, offer parental control modules.  Many wireless access points and gateway routers have parental control features as well, including time of day controls.  I have included information about the Linksys wireless access point.  I have also included a comparison of Parental Control software applications from PC Magazine.

For more information on protecting children online, check out these sites:

  • Protectkids.com -- which is a good series of tutorials on the specific dangers on the Web done in article-style format for easy reading.

  • NetSafekids -- this is site is administered by the National Academies, so it's the latest the academic world has to offer on the subject.

  • Cybersmart Kids Online -- this is a site aimed at your child. The child should read this (preferably with you) to get walked through what's good and bad on the Web. KidRocket will most likely keep all the harmful stuff away anyhow, but it's still good for the kid to know what's going on for those times he's at school or at a friend's house. The site might be a tad slow at times because it's hosted in Australia, but it's good content.

Parental Controls with Zone Alarm

Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite comes with a parental control option that basically allows you to set up web filtering to keep your children from the worst of the Internet.  This setting can be password protected so they cannot be changed without your knowledge.

The illustrations below and lower right show the selections available on the Categories tab.  This allows you to block web sites by type of content.

The illustration below shows the main tab, where you can turn the controls on and off.  The Smart Filter Dynamic Real-Time Rating feature makes judgments about unrated and uncategorized web sites, and when in doubt, will allow or block depending on how you configure the feature.
